Golf Shaft Flex Guide: Which Flex Is Right for You?

Shaft flex is how much a shaft bends during your swing. The right flex helps you square the face and launch the ball at a good height. The wrong one costs distance and accuracy. Here's a simple way to pick.

What are the golf shaft flexes?

  • Ladies (L): the softest flex.
  • Senior (A or M): for slower swing speeds.
  • Regular (R): the most common flex for average golfers.
  • Stiff (S): for faster, more aggressive swings.
  • Extra Stiff (X or TX): for very fast swings.

Shaft flex chart: which flex should I use?

Use your driver swing speed if you know it. If not, your typical driver carry distance is a good stand-in. These are rough guides that most fitters start from:

Flex Driver swing speed Typical driver carry
Ladies Under 60 mph Under 150 yards
Senior 60 to 75 mph 150 to 200 yards
Regular 75 to 90 mph 200 to 240 yards
Stiff 90 to 105 mph 240 to 275 yards
Extra Stiff Over 105 mph Over 275 yards

How do I know if my shaft is too stiff or too soft?

  • Too stiff: low ball flight, shots leaking right (for a right-handed golfer), and a dead, harsh feel.
  • Too soft: ballooning high shots, hooks or big left misses, and inconsistent distance.

Does shaft weight matter as much as flex?

It matters a lot. A lighter shaft (around 50 to 60 grams in a driver) is easier to swing fast. A heavier one (65 grams and up) gives more control to stronger players. Many golfers who think they need a softer flex really need a lighter shaft.

Can I change the shaft in my driver?

Yes. Most modern drivers, fairway woods and hybrids have adjustable hosels, so a shaft with the right adapter tip screws straight in. When you buy a used shaft, check the tip matches your club's brand (for example a TaylorMade tip for a TaylorMade head). Every used shaft we sell lists its tip.

Where can I find clubs in my flex?

On any of our category pages, open the Flex filter and pick yours. You can also tap Save this search and we'll email you when a club in your flex is listed. Start with used drivers, used irons or all clubs.
